Admission to camp is based on skill level and will be determined/agreed on before payment is made.
We will meet each day at Shelly's studio and campers will be given a mix of theory and practical assignments that fit their current photographic skill level. Participants will be given a workbook to use during their time here and materials that cater to their learning style. They will leave knowing a lot more than when they arrived; this will hopefully lead to a greater love of photography and usable skills they can apply immediately, creating beautiful photos, understanding their camera gear, editing software and off-camera flash/lighting.
Basic Photography Camp
This is for the student who is good at taking pics with their smartphone and wants to begin taking photos with a DSLR camera. Or you already take photos with a DSLR camera and want to get off "auto" mode. Maybe you got a camera as a gift and want to learn to use it. If so, this camp is for you.
At this level you will learn the basics behind how to use your camera, what makes a good photo and how to take one. Taught in small group format, with ample time for 1 on 1 mentoring, students will be given a mix of theory and practical applications, and will work towards building a solid understanding of the foundational elements of photography by the end of the week. The goal will be to take photos no longer using "auto" mode.
$450 full day (9a - 4p), $250 half day (9-1 or 12-4)
Intermediate Photography Camp
This is for the student who understands manual mode or who has completed Basic Photography Camp and wants to take his/her understanding to the next level and sharpen his/her technical and compositional skills.
At this level we will spend time shooting in an area of interest, synthesizing theory and practical knowledge. Basic lighting (off camera flash, reflectors) and editing techniques (Lightroom/Photoshop) will be introduced as well
$450 full day (9a-4p), $250 half day (9a-1p or 12-4p)
Advanced Photography Camp
This is for photographers who fully understand their gear, the basics of the technical & theoretical concepts of photography and would like to spend time working on creating a body of work, building a portfolio of images, using editing software, shooting on location at local parks & sporting venues if desired. We will take trips to locations and have lots of time for 1 on 1 monitoring. Students should identify an area of focus: portraits, sports, landscape, still life, street photography.
$450 full day (9a-4p) $250 half day (9a-1p or 12p-4p)

About the Photographer
Shelly grew up with photographer grandparents, who spent summers in the foothills of Lassen National Volcanic Park taking photos of rock formations, waterfalls & flowers, holding reflectors and holding photo gear. And while this was an invaluable education, she longed to photograph people! So after a 12 year teaching career in Daly City CA, getting married and raising a son with autism, she started and ran a successful portrait and event photography business for 7 years in Lafayette, CA. Now with a son in high school, Shelly has decided to blend her two careers together and begin teaching photography.
Campers are responsible for bringing a DSLR camera, a data card, owner's manual, a battery for their camera, a strap and a lunch. A snack will be provided for campers.
