 Cake Smash Preparation Tips

It's time to party!

Cake Smash Information

About Dahlias and Daisies

I am a portrait photographer, specializing in seniors & family sessions.

Tip 1

Squishy!!

The week prior to your session let baby play with their food at dinner! Mashed potatoes are wonderful for this! Boys at this cake smash age tend to get upset when their hands get dirty (Go figure!) so it’s best to let them play a bit before the big day!

Tip 2

Ewwww!

If bringing your own cake there are a few colors and flavors you will want to avoid. As far as icing goes, red, brown, and black are a few colors you will want to avoid. Red gives murder scene vibes and brown/black just looks dirty! We are going for “cute dirty” not “ewww dirty”! As far as cake flavor you will want to keep it simple, white breading and plain icing!

Tip 3

Does it fit?

Clothing is so important when it comes to photography! If you are bringing your own clothes first check to make sure they fit! You’d be surprised how many people wait until they are at the session to try on their clothes for the first time!

Tip 4

Sleepy Time!

It’s best to schedule your session right after a nap instead of before! We want baby to be happy and rested because a cake smash can be a ton of fun and wear them out quickly! We also want to avoid falling asleep in the car. If baby does happen to fall asleep in the car It’s best to wake them up outside and walk them around a few minutes before bringing them in. It never goes well if they wake up in a strange place!

Tip 5

Stranger Anxiety

It’s common at this age for girls to have stranger anxiety… throw in a pandemic where no one has left the house in a year or two and it’s a double whammy! Let your photographer know ahead of time whether your child has stranger anxieties. When I photography a baby who I know is upset by my mere presence I must treat them a little differently. I make myself scarce and let them get comfortable with the shooting are without me there. I make my appearance when they are ready!
