Kinetic     Flow     Painting

A professional photographer and graphic designer by trade, Blackwell has long dabbled in creating art via design software like Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel Painter, et al.  Years of patient trials with different techniques and processes shaped not only a creative vision but a singular proprietary technique to express these visions she dubbed Kinetic Flow Painting™

Using a Wacom tablet and pen - similar to a paintbrush but with flowing pixels instead of paint or ink – Blackwell’s work emphasizes elegant waves of color and texture, suggestive of modern dance. Layers are combined and blended with different blend modes and masks (color and luminosity) to create truly one-of-kind works of art. No single piece can be recreated, only reproduced.

The result is an exhibit of limited editions that reflect a 21st century approach to creating abstract art.

Once completed, the final work is custom printed directly to a sheet of metal via a dye sublimation process that allows for rich color and depth of detail – a near 3D effect.

About Jyl Blackwell

about image

“I have always been intrigued with pushing the boundaries of a piece of artistic software,” said Blackwell, “bending the usual way a brush is created or a color mask is applied. Not just thinking outside the box, but throwing the box away! Applying classic brush and paint techniques within the framework of these technology-based tools.”

True to her artist roots, Blackwell spends hours honing each piece to match her original inspiration. Nothing is pre-sketched nor is any sort of template applied; rather, each piece reflects her singular focus to render each piece as an original work.

“My years spent as a photographer, graphic designer and in a commercial print shop was the catalyst for creating a process of utilizing different software in combination with the actual printing in unique ways,” she said.
