Quick tips to help you have a  successful Head shot portrait session

Some of the most common mistakes I notice when look at professional images of folks is poor picture quality. In today's market, the average point & shoot or phone camera won’t cut it.  Additionally, trendy clothing tends to date a photograph very quickly, be aware of that when choosing your styles.

Tip 1

What to wear for corporate headshot - Men

A business suit is a good choice for a corporate head shot. If you want a more casual look, you can forego the blazer and wear a white shirt with a tie. For blazers, grey or navy in solid colors are often a good choice for timeless portraits. You don’t want clothing or hairstyles to look too trendy as it can date the photograph and many companies will expect the corporate head shot to last a long time for the investment they are about to make.

Tip 2

What to wear for corporate headshots - Women

Wardrobe choices for corporate head shots can feel more complicated for women but choosing a classic business suit or simple blouse and skirt or pants is a great idea. Again, don’t wear anything too trendy and choose something that’s for fall or winter instead of summery for your head shot photography session.

Tip 3

Clothing in general...

Avoid complex patterns like stripes or checkered items; opt for solid color when possible. This will help give the image a more classic look and be more timeless as styles and trends change. Horizontal lines on clothing can be difficult to look at. Vertical lines in clothes should be minimal but the presence of them may have a slimming effect.

Tip 4

Details...details... details...

Hair.... Nails.... Glasses.   A bad hair day can ruin your whole session.  Be sure you make arrangements and allow yourself the time needed for your hair style.  As far as nails, clean and manicured.  Avoid clashing colors.   Glasses should be clean.  We can take images with and without your glasses if you prefer.  Suntans - simply said, don't overdue it! Moderation is the key.  If you end up with a sunburn, you may end up rescheduling your session.

Tip 5

Guys...

Don't get a new haircut the day before your session.  Give it a few days.  Also, if you have a heavy beard, shave just prior to arrival.

Tip 6

Communicate your Intent...

Talk to your photographer ahead of time and let them know what type of image you are attempting to convey.  Are you looking for the traditional corporate look or something a little more casual and relaxed?  Perhaps you are a trades person and you are looking for an environmental on location shot... all of this is important.

TIP 7

Don't....

Don't wear jewelry that will distract viewers from your face or that looks dated; often simple is best.  Don't wear loud stripes or checks. Don't wear a jacket that you cannot button or that you have to stretch to button... it will not look good.   Don't over-do your makeup.

Tip 8

Focus on you...

Dark clothes attract less attention and help put the attention where it belongs...on your face and eyes.

Tip 9

Be sure the image portrays "you".

If you are "not" a corporate type, let me know what type of look you want to portray. Maybe send me samples of stuff you like.

Tip 10

Wear something that makes you feel good!

The most important wardrobe tip for professional corporate head shots is to wear something you like, that makes you feel good! Feeling like you look good with nice clothes, a polished look and a warm smile will result in you enjoying the outcome of your head shot and something you are proud of. It’s supposed to make you look confident and professional so take the time to choose something professional and classic to help you achieve desired results in your photograph.
