What exactly is The Luminary Retreat and who is it for?
The Luminary Retreat is an intimate collaborative learning experience (& well-deserved mini getaway!) for a small group of female photographers. You would love to kick-start your own photography business or have a newly established (1-5 years) photography business and be wishing to gain experience and inspiration to help your business flourish. (To get the most our of this experience you must already be using manual mode). The idea of the retreat is to illuminate your business path forward and to push your business and photography skills to the next level, while sharing a Tassie bush/beach adventure with like-minded individuals.
Who is it hosted by?
The Luminary Retreat is hosted by two experienced & successful Tasmanian photographers and friends, Astrid Simone of Astrid Simone Photography and Mel Murphy of Murphy Photography. We are keen to provide the chance for female photographers to absorb our years of knowledge & experience (a combined 22+ years!) in a relaxed & stunning environment.
What will attendees learn?
Our aim of the two-day retreat is to teach practical steps that you can apply to your business and photography to see a significant growth in confidence, skills & creativity. We will cover everything from how to book clients to the image-delivery process, & you will see how we shoot families and couples. There will be two live styled sessions - one with a gorgeous family and the other with a cute couple. So whether you're a family, child, couple or wedding photographer, there will be something for you to learn.

How is this different from other retreats?
We believe that each of us has something valuable to offer, and it is our intention to illuminate this. In the itinerary we have included an informal evening educational session called "Campfire Chats" - which is essentially your opportunity to ask us anything about our businesses, inspiration & shooting styles. We also envisage this as a chance to open up the discussion to learn & share with each other. This will feed our creative souls while the sumptuous supper, chilled wine & toasted marshmallows will feed us physically :)
There will also be the opportunity to put everything you have learned into practise by photographing not only the styled family and couple, but also each other. These portraits will be available for you to use for your website & social media (or just your partner's bedside table!) So bring along your camera, a cute outfit and your hair straightener.

The Luminary Retreat will be held at the breath-taking Bay of Fires Bush Retreat and surrounds on Tasmania's East Coast on January 14 & 15, 2019.

About us - Mel & Astrid
Creating visual legacies for couples and families is what has driven me in my photography career for the past 10 years. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about the moments I have preserved being adored by future generations. I always say that photography is one of few industries where the value of a client's investment increases over time.
Central to these visual legacies is the idea of authentic connections. This is a tangible element in my images. In part it happens organically, and the other part is direction from me, the photographer. This is a skill that I am looking forward to sharing with The Luminary Retreat attendees, as well as my love of finding soft light.

Photography fell into my lap almost 12 years ago, and I couldn’t be
more grateful! I love this job.
I’m a natural light photographer, specialising in family and wedding imagery. My goal as a family photographer is to capture the moments. I love emotion and connection and that is what I strive to capture through my lens.
During the workshop I want to give you an insight on the art of storytelling by capturing moments and how to set yourself up for success in getting those candid moments with your clients
I hope to inspire for unearthing and cultivating your own artistic voice, while staying fresh and setting yourself apart from others.
