Documentary Family Photography

Document You Days

Whether you're flipping heart shaped pancakes for breakfast or reading "Goodnight Moon" for the 3rd time while snuggled in bed, I'll be there to ultimately show you just how much you love each other. Let me be your family historian and document all the moments that you never get to see.

"You can't afford not to do this. You can't get this time back. And you need some sort of record of how awesome you are; how sweet and beautiful your kids are; how great your spouse is, and how the two of you are doing a great job parenting." - Lynn R.

What is a Day in the Life?

What exactly is a Documentary photo session?

The term "documentary is just a word to describe my approach to photography. It is a way of photographing connections and interactions between your family members in an undirected way. Authentic moments generally make for more authentic photos.

That means no matching outfits, no posed portraits, just you and your beautiful family being your true selves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What does unlimited coverage for 1 full day really mean?

A. From when the kids wake up in the morning until they go to bed for the night, I'll be there covering everything else that goes in on in-between. To make that happen, I typically sleep over the night before (in a guest room or on the couch) so everyone is more comfortable with me and my camera first thing the next morning. If having me sleepover the night before is not an option for your family, a room can be booked at a local hotel the night before (charged as a reimbursable)

Q. Will you really travel anywhere for full Day in the Life sessions?

A. Yup! I LOVE to travel and this is one of the ways I get to see the world! My plane ticket (up to $300) to your destination is included with the Day in the Life Collection. You just need to provide sleeping accommodations for the night before our session (and after if the session is not local).

Q. I'm not ready to commit to a full Day in the Life yet, but am interested in a Slice of Life. How many hours would you recommend?

A. For Slice of Life sessions I typically recommend 3-4 hours of coverage scheduled either first thing in the morning, or in the afternoon after lunch.

Q. Am I supposed to feed you while you shoot? How does that work? Do you sit down with us to eat during meal times? Is there anything you're allergic to?

A. Yes, you are required to provide my meal(s) for sessions 3 hours or longer. However, I promise I am not a picky eater. My only weird food restriction is quinoa (ask me about it during our session!) Most clients just place an extra place setting at the table for me.

Q. What about access? If we go to an amusement park, do I need to pay for your ticket?

A. Yes, you will responsible to provide access for me anywhere you plan to have photographic coverage (i.e. admission/entrance fees, train or metro rides) If you are driving, I'll need a seat in your car to wherever you're going. My bottom has squished between many carseats in the past!

Q. Can I use a Day In the Life or Slice of Life for a wedding?

A. The short answer is no. While I do offer documentary wedding photography, my offerings are a bit different due to certain variables specific to weddings. Please call 201-704-1153 for documentary wedding photography pricing.

Q. What happens after the photo session? When will I get to see my photos?

A. Your images will be ready for viewing and ordering approximately 3-5 weeks after your session. You will receive a link to your online gallery where you can view and order photos. If your purchase includes an album you will receive a link to your album design. On your album link, you will be able to make comments, changes, and approve your album while the link is open for 7 days. If no comments are made by day 7, it is assumed approved and album production will start. Digital files and slideshow will be delivered via web transfer within 48 hours after your album is approved.

Q. Can I get the RAW files from my session?

A. No. RAW files are not included and not available for purchase.

Q. Who owns the copyright of the images taken during my session?

A. Original copyright of all images created during your session remains with the photographer (Julia Chang-Lomonico). Clients receive a limited copyright release to use purchased images for personal use only. Meaning you can share on your personal social media accounts (tagging me), and print as many copies to grandma's content! If you ever have question on when and where photos can be used (i.e. in a publication or 3rd party use) feel free have that 3rd party contact me directly.

Q. I'm a famous / public figure and need my images to be private.

A. Please call 201-704-1153 to find out more about non-disclosure agreements and fee structure.

About the photographer

Each family has a story to tell. A story that is steeped in chaos, laughter, and the everyday minutiae of family life. A story that is ultimately about love. Julia, a North Jersey documentary family photographer, is passionate about capturing these stories to show families the love and compassion that they can’t often see for themselves.

Julia’s own story is one that is woven around the family and friends that are her creative inspiration. She is a wearer of many hats: daughter and sister, food lover, aspiring yogi, karaoke diva, loving wife, and rock-star mom to two little girls.

Photography has always been the channel through which she documents the different stories of her life and she has turned her passion into a business of doing the same for the families she works with. She continues to seek out new families and new stories to tell with the same care, kindness, and humor she uses to document her own family.
